The article is devoted to the problematic aspects of the appointment and production of forensic ballistic examinations assigned as part of the investigation of cases related to the illegal trafficking and use of deactivated firearms (decommissioned weapons), as well as firearms made by homemade method on its basis. The author reveals the importance of forensic ballistic examinations in criminal proceedings and highlights the processes of law enforcement practice accompanying this activity. The opinion is expressed about the need for the initiator of the forensic examination to correctly formulate the questions submitted for the expert's permission, the result of which can be solved tasks that allow to effectively investigate criminal events during the preliminary investigation and subsequent fair trial, and their formulations are proposed. The problems of information support for the production of forensic ballistic examinations of deactivated firearms are considered, due to the lack of reference materials and databases containing information about the features of the material part of such weapons, especially the design modifications of their main parts during manufacture.
