This article shows statistical data on fraud in auto insurance. The variety of fraudulent schemes used in this sphere of services is disclosed. A list of pre-investigation checks is provided, which is necessary for collecting evidence on fraud in the insurance of vehicles for the initiation of criminal proceedings. Features of the initiation of criminal cases on fraud in the field of auto insurance are shown: compulsory insurance of civil liability of vehicle owners and voluntary insurance of vehicles. The judicial-investigative practice in cases of crimes in the sphere of auto insurance is analyzed, which shows that the main reason for initiating a case is the statement of the insurance company; the second most common cause is the identification of relevant facts in the course of operational and search activities by the internal affairs bodies. This kind of insurance fraud related to the conclusion of the contract of compulsory insurance of civil liability of vehicle owners is considered in detail. Examples are given from the forensic investigation.
