The article deals with the genesis of domestic legislation that regulates the system of the prosecutor's supervision in Russia to help understand its acting state more detailed. The authors observe the evolution of the prosecutor's function from its origin in the XVII century to the prevailing system of the XXI century playing a key role in the protection of legality and law and order in Russia. The authors analyze various stages of development including reforming that changes the legal system and political conditions as well as determines the role and functions of the prosecutor's office in the sphere of supervision of the procedural activity of the inquiry bodies and the preliminary investigation organs. Particular attention is paid to the action of prosecutors in different historical periods: from tsarist Russia to the present days. It gives an opportunity to identify stable and variable aspects of the prosecutor's supervision in the criminal procedure and also demonstrate how social and legal transformations have influenced his position in the system of state power. The issues of the interaction of the prosecutor's office with other state institutions and society as a whole are covered. The research of historical aspects of the prosecutor's supervision in Russia in the sphere of criminal pro-ceedings makes it possible to study its nature to understand its function in the context of the legal system of the modern Russian Federation.
