This article analyzes key stages of digitalization of criminal proceedings, traces trends and results of the implementation of the federal target program "Development of the judicial system of Russia" in 2007—2011, which laid the legal foundation and outlined the main directions of digitalization in the judicial system of the Russian state. The author shows the role of information and communication resources in supporting the courts functioning and presents the experience of digitalization of criminal proceedings in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The article highlights the need to develop a Unified strategy for digitalizing all types of legal proceedings on a united digital platform to synchronize these processes and ensure the compatibility of software and equipment used in various departments, bodies, and services. The issue of using artificial intelligence technology in forensic practice and in the court activity of is touched. The author substantiates the conclusion that the practice of preparing verdict texts by using artificial intelligence technology is illegal because of the absence of a regulatory base for such a practice, clarifications from the Plenum of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, as well as a platform for the processing of court decisions specifically oriented to the needs of the judicial system.
