The article investigates the use of the mass media in the fight against crime, and their specific role in the informational and psychological impact on people. On the one hand, the majority of population receives information about the activities of law enforcement agencies, their successes and achievements through television and radio broadcasts, publications in print. Hence the need to use mass media in the detection and investigation of crimes is increasing steadily. On the other hand, the information where law enforcement is covered in the negative way, produces certain patterns of thinking and assessment: this is not particular officers that have committed wrongful acts who are to be blamed, but the law enforcement system as a whole. Some facts of nefarious activities, rudeness, abuse of power, etc. hinder mutual understanding and trust of population and representatives of the power structures. The success of the law enforcement activities largely depends on the support and assistance of the public. Their attitude determines the effectiveness of information gathering and the formation of the evidence base for criminal cases. The best international practice strongly suggests that successful fight against crime has no real success without the support of the population.
