The present article deals with the comparative legal analysis of the use of life imprisonment in the legal systems of Germany and Russia. Life imprisonment by virtue of its legal nature imposes maximum of the amount and duration of right restrictions to the convicted person. It may usually be imposed in comparable legal systems for the most serious crimes against life and health, sexual inviolability and sexual freedom of the individual, against the foundations of the state system and state security, against the peace and security of mankind. In addition to imposing a sentence of life imprisonment the mechanism of parole is of special interest. The study of criminological characteristics of the personality of the convict, serving a life sentence, is also of considerable importance. Despite the European legal space globalization national penal institutions retain their specificity.
