The article includes philosophical analysis of war as a social phenomenon. It is established that war and military experience hold a special place in the historical memory. War as an extreme state of a country promotes spiritual revival of its peo-ple. Circumstances of wartime give rise to the best thoughts about life and death, which would have not emerged in people’s minds in terms of still peaceful life - in daily routine even burdened by the matter of war. The extent of war is a parameter defining its place in the national consciousness. Russian national consciousness is marked by understanding of war as sacred, sacrificial, just, great, nationwide and vic-torious. War is a crucial element in development of Russian state. Russian archetypical model of war is not attack but defense, repulse of external aggression. This under-standing of war is caused by the peculiarity of the history, geography and culture. Russian people managed to overcome all political and ideological transformations only due to their solidarity, which hardened in all the wars and strengthened our na-tion still more.
