The article is devoted to the history of criminalistics registration. Contrary to established stereotypes in criminalistics, according to which the beginning of criminalistics registration is considered maiming, stigma, tattoos, the author proves the inexpediency to consider these as methods of registration. Neither first nor second, no third are not inherent characteristics of criminalistics registration. Registration is, in the first place provides, displaying information about the objects of in the accounting units, and not the artificial giving of the distinguishing features of the object. It is the need of optimization in the fight against crime through the use of potential information about the criminals that are stored in a specially created arrays, at the time, initiated the establishment in the law enforcement system of criminalistics registration. Thus, knowledge about the organization of criminalistics registration, like many other knowledge significantly influenced methods, techniques and technologies of criminalistics, were borrowed from other areas of human activity and skillfully adapted for use in the fight against crime.
