The article provides a comprehensive analysis of causes leading to emergence of such a negative phenomenon as extremism. The author emphasizes that without more sophisticated comprehension of these causes, effective preventive activity in this field is hardly possible. The set of causes underlying extremism is highly complicated. It includes social-economic, demographic, political (of domestic and foreign character), technological, and, at last, often underestimated cultural-ideological factors. The article pays particular attention to the last of them. The author offers to put aside falsely understood political correctness and consider extremism (using the case of modern Islamism) as an outcome of the development and functioning of a specific civilization model. He also considers extremism as a phenomenon explained from the historical and religious points of view. The conclusion is that only comprehensive understanding of causes and prevention of extremism can reverse the undesirable trend and slow down further spreading of extremism (firstly that of radical-Islamic nature). To achieve this goal it's necessary to coordinate efforts of all main subjects of social relations.
