Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
Literary activity of M. YE. Saltykov-Shchedrin, who was a commentor, a satirist, a literary critic and an editor of magazines „Otechestvennye Zapiski“ and „Sovremennik“ (together with N. A. Nekrasov) became a famous phenomenon in Russian literature of the second part of the XIXth century.Being the offspring of the family of typical landlords advocating serf-ownership, he was the witness of all the horrors of the serfdom even in his early childhood. These events aroused in him „rudiments of human conscience“. Seven years spent in Vyatka gave Saltykov-Shchedrin new impressions that let him reveal defects of acting legal reality where despotism of officials, state property embezzlement and deception of ordinary people prevailed. Unprecedented sophisticated crimes as «smallpox vaccination», collection of illegal taxes and direct „extortion“ of money from peasants took place.„Provincial Essays“ by Saltykov-Shchedrin is a severe exposure of the whole Russian bureaucratic system. Here the author obviously showed that in the world of lawlessness and tyranny innocent ordinary people were put in prison instead of state property embezzlers, bribe-takers or hardened criminals.
