The article deals with the problems of examining various aspects to control the activities of the interior bodies of modern Russia by the public. The author pays his attention to the fact that the acting legislation of Russia gives certain opportunities to control police activities by the public. However, both forms of such control and methods of its implementation require to be improved. The author analyzes the existing forms of public control used the most actively in modern Russia, picking out such form of public control as public councils in the interior bodies. In the article the author summarizes the experience of work of the public council in the Volgograd Region Main Department of the Interior. On the basis of empirical material the author analyzes the population attitude towards the problem to control police activities by the public, assesses these public councils’ activities on the part of the population; sorts out the main sources of information related to the public councils’ activities in the interior bodies.
