The article is devoted to theoretical problems of the typology of criminal proceedings, in particular, the preconditions for the transition from a criminal process of an accusatory type to an investigative organization of proceedings. The author pays special attention to the fact that until now the issue of the reasons for the appearance of a criminal process of a search type has not been resolved. They are real puzzles for legal science. A hypothesis is advanced that these reasons are due to revolutionary changes in the world outlook, namely, the introduction of ideas of the scientific worldview into the public consciousness. The author gives arguments explaining the role of the church in including research procedures in criminal proceedings, and also explains the general role of canon law in creating the prerequisites for changing the typology of the process. The revolutionary, and not evolutionary, nature of the transition to the criminal process of the investigative type is substantiated. The ideological foundations of this transition are indicated. On the basis of the indicated historical problems and paradoxes, the author formulates the tasks to be solved by modern criminal procedure science.
