The authors of the article analyze the public opinion influence on the image formation of a police officer. On the basis of the sociological research the authors mark social-psychological and professional-personal components to influence the public opinion formation on the police activity. The measurement of the given indicators makes it possible to assess the level of police confidence as low and the image as negative. The authors define the concept of image, the structure of the professional image of a policeman as well as identify the criteria of the image formation of law enforcement officers. The authors of the article emphasize that it is impossible to effectively assess police activity and create a positive image of police officers without public opinion inquiry. The public opinion is said to be the tool that can determine the main ways to optimize the image of law enforcement officers. In the article it is noted that while making a dialogue with the civil society the police should respond to its demands. Only purposeful interactions of the state, educational institutions and officers themselves focused to meet the needs of the society in law enforcement sphere can optimize the image of police officers.
