The article deals with the problems of public monitoring the activities of the interior bodies by citizens of Russia. The author pays attention to the fact that one of the main problems is the low involvement of the great segment of population in public monitoring, that demonstrates the low level of interpersonal trust in the Russian society as a whole and not a high level of public confidence to the activities of both law enforcement agencies and institutions of the civil society. The author notes that nowadays citizens of the Russian Federation have the right to exercise public monitoring both personally and as a part of public associations, but forms of such monitoring, methods of its implementation require further improvement. On the basis of empirical material, the author analyzes the public attitude to the problem to develop public monitoring the police activities, identifies the main sources of information related to the activities of public councils at the interior bodies, demonstrates the assessment of the public associations’ activities by population. The article deals with the problem of the media influence on the formation of public opinion on the implementation of public monitoring the police activities.
