Criminal procedure is characterized by a variety of procedural statuses of an individual subject to prosecution. In fact, there are such two statuses at the stage of preliminary investigation — a suspect and an accused. Therefore, suggestions are made in legal publications to establish one status. The research proved the inconsistency of such suggestions, as the existence of two procedural statuses for an individual subject to investigation followed by prosecution is of a paramount practical importance: the status (whether it is a sus-pect or an accused) determines the admissible coercive procedural measure. Moreover, the article demonstrates the dependence of a procedural status on the essence of the proposition brought against the person related to his / her involvement in the crime committed. Every time there are transformations or reconsiderations of the proposition related to an individual's involvement in the crime committed, it eventually leads to the change of the procedural status of an individual subject to prosecution.
