FEATURES OF FORENSIC EXAMINATION OF THE TRACES OF FIREARMS ON BULLETS AND CASINGS, WHICH WERE SUBJECTED TO HIGH-TEMPERATURE HEATING
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
The article is devoted to problems arising in ballistic investigations of objects ex-posed to high temperatures under fire conditions. Bullets and cartridges with traces of firearms may be used as such. Description of materials often used to manufac-ture cartridge parts is provided. Processes that can occur in bimetallic and brass bullets and shells at high temperatures are considered, and the result of such ef-fects is shown. Description of the heat treatment process of bullets and casings and illustrations of their appearance before and after high temperature exposure are giv-en. It was noted that the degree of change in the features of the gun parts, which are reflected in the tracks, depends on both temperature and time of thermal action. It has been established that when heated to one temperature, the identification signs appearing in the traces on the bimetallic shells of bullets and shell casings are pre-served and can be identified, and when heated to other temperatures identification becomes impossible. It is determined that if the material from which the parts of the cartridges are made is brass, the identification of the firearm is feasible regardless of the temperature and time conditions of thermal action on them. It is shown that bimetallic bullets and casings in the fire area can be destroyed by complete oxida-tion.
