When investigating certain types of crimes committed against animals, forensic bio-logical examinations are appointed and carried out. With the help of them, the inves-tigator (interrogator) and the court establish the method of committing a crime, the specific systematic affiliation of the animal necessary to determine the subject of the crime, as well as other facts and circumstances. It is proposed to use the term "fo-rensic theriological examination", which is an independent subspecies of the type of examinations of vertebrate animals of the kind of zoological examinations of the class of biological examinations. The article considers the subject, object and tasks of forensic theriological examination with an indication of an approximate list of is-sues to be resolved during the study (for the study of a mammal, products from it, tools for the extraction of a mammal and its habitat). It was concluded that at present the forensic theriological examination is carried out by private experts, who, as a rule, are representatives of scientific and educational organizations; certain issues are resolved by forensic experts of the Ministry of Justice of Russia in the frame-work of the forensic biological examination and forensic examination of objects of wild flora and fauna. In support of theoretical provisions, the author of the article provides examples of judicial and investigative practice.
