A NEW LOOK AT THE POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE TECHNIQUE: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
The paper examines a chemical technique for developing latent fingerprints, developed at the Department of Criminalistics of the Kyiv Higher School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR in 1976, termed the potassium permanganate technique. The essence of the technique consists of applying a solution of potassium permanganate with sulfuric acid to the surfaces under investigation in order to develop invisible latent fingerprints on them. This technique is effective for detecting prints on polymer and other complex surfaces, including the adhesive sides of adhesive tapes. It has been established that the solution retains its properties during longterm storage, and the developed prints can be stored indefinitely. The advantages of the technique are described (the possibility of reprocessing, working with wet and sticky surfaces, and others) along with its disadvantages (toxicity, safety precautions). It is concluded that the potassium permanganate technique is advisable for use as an additional tool in expert practice.
