The article analyzes the stages of formation and use of odor traces in the disclosure and investigation of crimes. It is shown that a key stage was the recognition of the evidentiary value of the results of studies of these traces conducted as part of such forensic examinations as forensic odorological examinations, which was facilitated by replacement in the use of traditional breeds as detector dogs with their weak sense of smell on dogs of a fundamentally new breed shalayka (Sulimov's dogs) - a hybrid of a jackal and a husky. But this examination was then replaced by a forensic biological examination of human odor traces. It is shown that as a result of this replacement and the organizational transformations that have occurred during this time, the vast possibilities of forensic odorology can currently be used only to a small extent in Russia, and this directly contradicts the interests of combating crime. Suggestions have been made to rectify the current unsightly situation.
