The researches of civilian firearms and traces of the barrel bore on bullets formed as a result of a shot constitute a significant volume of examinations conducted by ballistics experts. The lack of significant forensic information about the weapon, the different terminological approach in the description of parts and details, as well as traces of the barrel bore negatively affects the quality of the research because all this can lead to expert errors and incorrect conclusions. The article discusses the system of the barrel of a firearm with an oval-screw drill, offers the author's definitions of parts and details, as well as traces on bullets fired from it. The influence of the shape of the cross-section of the barrel bore on the deformation of the bullet and the display of traces on the bullets in the form of two groups of contact surfaces has been established. A brief history of the creation of oval-screw barrels and the reasons for the commercial attractiveness of such weapons in Russia are given.
