Hunting smoothbore firearms often act as a tool for committing crimes. The expert task of determining the distance of a long-range shot on a scree of shot is described in detail in the forensic literature. The expert lacks, and sometimes even a complete lack of verified information about the distance of a close shot. To fill the gap, the authors carried out experimental firing from a ʺSaiga-410ʺ self-loading carbine with .410 cartridges, which were equipped with shot and a Foster bullet. As a result of the analysis of the shot through obstacles, the features of gunshot injuries were established, as well as the manifestations of such additional traces of a shot as deposits of shot soot and gunpowder grains. The data obtained will make it possible to differentiate the distances of a close shot from a smoothbore hunting weapon, and will contribute to an increase in the efficiency of forensic ballistic research.
