THE POTENTIAL OF A VIRTUAL EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT FOR THE FORMATION OF STUDENTS’ INFORMATION COMPETENCE

Abstract (English):
The article deals with the model of a virtual educational environment in an open information space. The authors revealed the potential of virtual educational environments as an effective tool for organizing of educational and cognitive activity in the open information space. It is noted that in today’s society an educational environment should be open and the interaction of subjects of educational process should be organized on a network basis in contrast to the hierarchical interactions in traditional closed educational environments. The authors claim that such a virtual educational environment will enhance the effectiveness of the educational process, ensure the growth of students’ interest in research activity, encourage the development of independent thinking, actualizes the need for a critical analysis of information, and will form a habit of this analysis, which is the foundation of information competence of the individual. The authors pay special attention to the potential of the virtual educational environment focused on the identification of those who are likely to research, and thus keeping up their respective interests and motivation for further development.
