The article provides analysis of the phenomenon of truth in criminal proceedings from the viewpoint of existent approaches to understating the truth as the goal of criminal proceedings, the goal of proving and the principle of criminal procedure. The author provides his opinion on debatable issues concerning the mission of criminal proceedings. He substantiates the conclusion that contemporary concept of the mission of criminal proceedings doesn’t answer the real purpose of criminal procedure in the society; the axiomatic statement about supremacy of private interests over public is criticized. The author asserts that in criminal proceedings the balance of values should be observed with the focus on protecting not only individuals’ interests but the society in general. From the viewpoint of contemporary theory of knowledge it is concluded that the truth is the goal of proving and not the principle of criminal procedure. In the author’s opinion the principle determines the means (or conditions) of achieving the desired goal. The article offers classification of principles of the criminal procedure on the basis of their correlation with the goal of finding the truth.
