One of the most important guarantees while providing the rights and freedoms of the individual in the pretrial proceedings is said to be the control and supervisory activity. As the purpose of the given article the author gives the interpretation of the main components of the control and supervisory activity in the preliminary investigation while inquiring: the prosecutor's supervision and departmental control. The author of the article analyzes the concepts «control» and «supervision» through their administrative nature as well as determines their correlation applied to inquiring. Though these terms are synonymous in the dictionaries the author makes a conclusion that they differ. The concepts «control» and «supervision», first of all, differ from each other by their impact on the subject under control. The author argues the necessity to differentiate the concepts «supervision» and «control» as well as supervisory and control authorities while inquiring by means of adjusting the legislative regulation of the procedural status of'the court, the prosecutor, the chief of the inquiry body, the chief of the inquiry unit (department). The author gives his own definition of control and supervisory activity in the given field of the criminal procedure basing on the conducted research.
